Divided Consciousness
Creating Consciousness: A Study of Consciousness, Creativity, and Violence by Albert Low, A profound discussion of the philosophical, religious and scientific problem of consciousness in relation to evolution, creativity, spirituality and violence. Low weaves together fresh discoveries from contemporary thinkers with perennial wisdom from premodern religious sources while providing a highly original discussion of human nature. His main thesis is that each individual is a divided reality. We are simultaneously at the center (unified self) and the periphery (many dimensions of self). The fact that we are one and yet divided leads to Low's important discussion of ambiguity, creative tension and violence as integral to human existence. Chapters include Ambiguity: The Wound in the Heart; The Evolution of Consciousness and the Basic Ambiguity; On Awareness; The Birth of Trauma; and the Yearning for Unity.
Toward a Science of Consciousness III: The Third Tucson Discussions and Debates by Stuart R. Hameroff, Can there be a science of consciousness? This issue has been the focus of three landmark conferences sponsored by the University of Arizona in Tucson. The first two conferences and books have become touchstones for the field. This volume presents a selection of invited papers from the third conference. It showcases recent progress in this maturing field by researchers from philosophy, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, phenomenology, and physics. It is divided into nine sections: the explanatory gap, color, neural correlates of consciousness, vision, emotion, the evolution and function of consciousness, physical reality, the timing of conscious experience, and phenomenology. Each section is preceded by an overview and commentary by the editors.Contributors: Dick J. Bierman, Jeffrey Burgdorf, A. Graham Cairns-Smith, William H. Calvin, Christian de Quincey, Frank H. Three kinds of objects - In Buddhist Yogācāra theory, objects of consciousness can be divided into three categories according to their properties. These are: Bicameralism (psychology) - In psychology, bicameralism is a controversial theory asserting that the human brain once assumed a state known as a bicameral mind in which cognitive functions are divided between one part of the brain which appears to be "speaking" and a second part that listens and obeys. The idea was proposed in the book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, written by Julian Jaynes in 1976. Psychedelics, dissociatives and deliriants - Certain drugs can affect the subjective qualities of perception, thought or emotion, resulting in altered interpretations of sensory input, alternate states of consciousness, or hallucinations. This general group of pharmacological agents can be divided into three broad categories: psychedelics, dissociatives and deliriants. Artificial consciousness - Artificial consciousness (AC), also known as machine consciousness (MC) or synthetic consciousness, is a field related to artificial intelligence and cognitive robotics whose aim is to define that which would have to be synthesized were consciousness to be found in an engineered artefact.

The literary fruit of this period of intense fermentation and rapid development was his "epoch-making" book, Reden ber die Religion (1799; ed. His main thesis is that each individual is a divided reality. Moravian theology soon ceased to satisfy him, and his doubts took shape. It was now that he became chaplain to the family of Count Dohna-Schlobitten, developing in a cultivated and aristocratic household his deep love of family and social life. It showcases recent progress in this maturing field by researchers from philosophy, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, phenomenology, and physics. Though his ultimate principles were unchanged, the struggle showed him the inner divided consciousness.
